Update March 2018

The recorder group has continued to grow and now has about 28 active members with around 20 attending most playing sessions. We are very grateful to our musical director, Janet Lewis, for providing us with a wide variety of music to enjoy. The group includes members with varying playing abilities from beginners to quite experienced players. Those new to the recorder have welcomed being given some one to one support by Janet to help develop their confidence.

Between us we play most sizes of recorder (sopranino, descant, treble, tenor, bass and contrabass). Those who have been in the group from the beginning have noted how the overall standard of playing has improved so we can now play reasonably well pieces which we struggled with a few years ago.

We have enjoyed performing at a number of venues in the past year - in the Town Hall on Charter Day, in the Square on World Music Day and as part of the Heritage Day festivities. We also played at the Christmas tree festivals in Retford and Newark, with our friends from Newark U3A. We were particularly pleased to be asked to provide appropriate background music before the Ryton Chorale Christmas event at Hodsock Priory. In addition seven of us entertained the Phoenix Club at Lound which seemed to be enjoyed by all. Another highlight was that, in June, we hosted a playing day for our friends from Newark and Market Rasen U3A groups. This has become an annual event and we look forward to Market Rasen hosting this year. Each year several members continue to attend and enjoy playing at the U3A summer school.

 2016

We meet twice a month and play a variety of music, from baroque or even earlier to modern and jazzy things. We started with a mere three players and there are now about a dozen of us when we’re all present. Some of us attended the Recorder Course at the U3A Summer School this year.

We have almost a full range of instruments – descants, trebles, tenors and bases and a very wide range of skill! We have at least one beginner at present and several very competent players and the rest of us are somewhere in between!

We have played at several local engagements such as several local coffee mornings and a care home.

Playing Day 2016 Newark

On 20 June five U3A recorder groups met for a Playing Day, this year hosted by Newark.  Fourteen of the Retford recorder group attended, together with members from Newark and West Wolds, plus newly formed groups from Collingham and Southwell.  The day is an informal get-together to play music put forward by each group; a Bring and Share lunch also adds to the occasion.  Everyone greatly enjoyed the day, despite torrential rain on the morning journey.  We understand that a video will appear on YouTube in due course.

Practising at U3A Summer School July 2013

We recently even accompanied a production of Twelfth Night at Hodsock Priory!

But most of all we just love to play together for our own pleasure, though we have recently had the fun of a day playing with the Newark and Market Rasen U3A recorder groups.  We welcome new members of any age, instrument or skill.  We play tunes, rounds and harmonies; a mixture of classical and traditional music and have a great time and a good laugh!
